For Release: August 20, 2015
HARLAN, Iowa — Practical Farmers of Iowa and the Rosmann family invite farmers and the public to a special field day on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Rosmann Family Farms near Harlan. The event – “Putting the ‘Culture’ in AgriCulture: 30 Years with PFI” – will explore many facets of the Rosmanns’ multi-generational, diversified farm, and feature a celebration of Practical Farmers’ 30th anniversary. Rosmann Family Farms is located at 1222 Ironwood Road, about 4.5 miles northwest of Harlan.
The field day is free, open to all, and will be hosted by the Rosmann family, which includes: Ron Rosmann and Maria Vakulskas Rosmann; David Rosmann and Becky Tompkins-Rosmann; Daniel Rosmann and Ellen Walsh-Rosmann; and Mark Rosmann, who works with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Ag Service.
Together, family members operate several integrated farm businesses. Rosmann Family Farms grows and markets diverse crops and livestock on 700 certified organic acres. The farm consists of cattle, hogs, egg layers and a range of crops, including popcorn, soybeans, corn, small grains, hay and pasture, annual forages, and cover crops.
Maria operates Farm Sweet Farm, an on-farm retail store. Daniel and Ellen started and run FarmTable Delivery, a local foods delivery service, as well as Milk and Honey, a local foods restaurant they recently opened in Harlan that features food raised on the family farm.
The field day will explore these farm businesses, focusing on whole-farm organic production, marketing and integrating into local food systems. The event is sponsored by Golden Hills Resource Conservation & Development; Organic Valley, Organic Prairie and CROPP Cooperative; and Wheatsfield Cooperative.
In the morning, highlights will include the Rosmanns’ farrow-to-finish swine operation and Maria’s retail store. During the free lunch – which will include food from Organic Valley – help celebrate Practical Farmers of Iowa’s 30th anniversary and hear from special guest speakers, including Practical Farmers co-founder Larry Kallem; Mike Duffy and Kathleen Delate of Iowa State University; and Practical Farmers of Iowa’s Teresa Opheim. Following lunch, the discussion will include organic crop rotations, grazing and the other livestock enterprises. To conclude, Ellen and Daniel will speak about their new restaurant and their local foods delivery service.
“We’ve been involved with Practical Farmers of Iowa for 30 years, and our sons are following our lead,” says Ron Rosmann. “The next generation of Rosmanns are making their impact on Iowa agriculture and the local food movement using PFI’s values, mission and vision to guide them.”
Directions: From Harlan, go 2 miles west on state Route 44 to Ironwood Road. Turn right (north) and go 2.25 miles until you see the farm on the left (west) side of the road. Note: GPS or Google Maps may direct you to minimum-maintenance roads, which may be impassable during rainy conditions.
