EQIP Organic Initiative Sign Up Period Extended to June 13

Iowa—Iowa Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) opted to extend the sign up period for the special Organic Initiative through the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) until June 13, 2009. Sarah Carlson: "Practical Farmers of Iowa is excited to see the extension date for the sign-up, which started May 11, right during the hurried spring planting season. The June 13th date will give farmers even more opportunity to get to their NRCS office and get signed up."

These EQIP practices will be covered in the fiscal year 2009 organic initiative:

  • Conservation Crop Rotation (328)
  • Cover Crop (340)
  • Nutrient Management (590)
  • Pest Management (595)
  • Prescribed Grazing (528)
  • Forage Harvest Management (511)

Organic-transition and organic-certified farmers are both eligible.

Contact Sarah Carlson at (515)232-5661, sarah@practicalfarmers.org, if you'd like more information about signing up or to brainstorm options for going organic.
