Approximately 30 percent of PFI members are Friends of Farmer members. In our member survey results, we’ve been seeing increased interests among our members in purchasing more food from local farmers. PFI’s Local Food program tries to help facilitate such needs by disseminating information on local producers as well as by conducting a Friends of Farmer focused research project. We’ve been conducting the local food record keeping project for the past year and a half to help participants accurately grasp how much local foods they are purchasing. The data from this study has been utilized to identify key tips for purchasing more local foods, as well as to examine the impact of purchasing local foods on the overall food budget. Through field days, Annual Conference sessions, research projects, and publications, the Local Food program at PFI provides venues to connect PFI producers with Friends of Farmer members where they can learn from each other to create more vibrant local food activities.
