Alternatives to the Cornish Cross at
Scattergoods 2009 PFI Field Day.
Approximately 30% of beginning farmers want to have a poultry operation as a part of their farm business. Poultry operations are a great source of extra income for any farm business because of short turnaround time, and fairly low capital investment required.

Started in 2009 the PFI Poultry program is still in its infant stages, but every year at our Cooperator's meeting, producers get together to set their priorities, (found here) for the questions PFI should be working towards answering. The 2009 meting lead to our researching: are there alternative breeds to the Cornish Cross? The results of our first cooperators project will be ready in February 2010.
Do you have similar questions? Think about getting involved in the PFI Cooperators' program.
In 2009 Practical Farmers of Iowa gave more than $25,000 to farmers for on-farm research trials, demonstration trials, and Field Day host payments. There is room for your involvement! If you would like to participate in a trial, host a field day, or if you have ideas about other projects or priorities contact Suzi or call 515-232-5661.
