Fruit and vegetable farmers are exploring on-farm compost methods to lower their input costs, increase soil microbial diversity, manage waste and improve yields. Following up on a 2014 PFI study with Jason Jones and Siobhan Danreis,  Rob Faux (Bremer County) and Siobhan (Pocohontas County) held on-farm trials investigating the effect of compost extract on yield […]

In a Nutshell
• Compost extract is made by steeping
compost in water, then applying the
sieved water (with compost extract)
as a soil drench with the intention
to increase beneficial soil biota, and
increased plant health, Brix and yield.
• At two farms, compost extract was
applied as a drench treatment to head
lettuce.
• Yield and Brix readings of head lettuce
was measured to determine impact of
compost extract applications.
Key Findings
• Drenching soil with compost extract
did not affect lettuce yield at either
farm.
• Drenching soil with compost extract
did not affect Brix levels in lettuce at
Danreis’ farm.
• Compost price could be cost prohibitive;
at high-intensity application,
compost cost was $1.25/row-ft.

RESEARCH REPORT

As Iowa summers go, Saturday, July 18 was a hot one: high humidity, and heat indices over 100 degrees at the peak. But this didn’t stop more than 40 people — including some who traveled from as far as West Branch, Woodward and Toledo, Iowa — from coming to learn about making quality compost and […]

Objectives: 1. Determine if bi-weekly soil drench applications of compost extract affects yield of lettuce and/or carrot. 2. Determine if bi-weekly soil drench applications of compost extract affects deg. Brix of lettuce and/or carrot. 3. Inform best practices for storing compost, steeping extract, and applying extract drench to soil.

How many field days greet you with a bluegrass band? When you nest a PFI field day within a Farm Cruise, some unexpected things can happen! 30 people came out to TableTop Farm to see the compost heat extraction system and hear how it integrates with the farm’s high tunnel production and compost process. Sally Gran, […]
