Transition to Organic With Diversity to Improve Soil Balance

Tour two on-farm research trials: planting corn in 60-inch row-widths for cover crops, and grazing sheep and spring-seeded cereal rye ahead of soybeans for weed control. You’ll will get to view equipment used for field preparation and organic crop. We will also discuss rotationally grazing sheep and cattle and how to make compost tea, and you’ll have a chance to see a first-year elderberry planting.

THE FARM:
Robert manages the family farm with help from his wife, April, and mother, Marilyn. The 160-acre diversified, organic farm will be a century farm in 2020. Robert grows corn, soybeans, hay and pasture. He also raises Belted Galloway cows and Dorper hair sheep, all grass-fed.

DIRECTIONS:
From Remsen: At the junction of IA Hwy 3 and County Road L14 just east of town, go north on Co Rd L14 for 7 miles to 100th Street / 510th Street and turn right (east). Go 2 miles to Lily Avenue and turn left (north); the farm will be on the right (east) side of the road in 0.25 mile.
From Granville: At the junction of IA Hwy 10 and Marsh Avenue / Co Rd L22, go south on Marsh Avenue / Co Rd L22 for 5 miles to 100th Street / 510th Street and turn right (west). Go 2 miles to Lily Avenue and turn right (north); the farm will be on the right (east) side of the road in 0.25 mile.
