Keynote Address

Three farmers on the Des Moines Lobe have used strip-till, no-till, cover crops and in-season nitrogen for more than a decade. Their yields, profitability and soil have all improved.
Meanwhile, Iowa's water quality is still among the nation's worst, and has improved little since the state launched its Nutrient Reduction Strategy over 13 years ago. That contradiction is what led Zack Smith, James Hepp and Matt Bormann to found the Lobe Rangers.
In this keynote, these three conservation farmers tell how they ended up publicly at odds with the agricultural groups that claim to speak for them. They also share what they've learned about why more than a decade of voluntary efforts to reduce fertilizer pollution has not led to meaningful improvements in water quality.
The keynote address will take place on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 1:15 p.m.
