Speakers: Neil Krummen, Nick Sennert & Jessob Steffen

Iowa's unpredictable summer weather offers special challenges for small grain farmers. Swathing oats, or leaving them in windrows to dry and be picked up several days later, runs the risk of surprise rainfall damaging the grain. But direct-cutting can be more difficult to dry down. In our August small grains shared learning call, farming partners Nick Sennert, Jessob Steffen and Neil Krummen will offer their experiences and insights with harvesting, drying and storing oats for both food-grade and cover crop seed markets. You'll also hear about their timing and strategies for planting buckwheat as a double-crop following oat harvest.

Small grains shared learning calls are conference calls where you can listen and talk with other farmers and small grains enthusiasts. Our speaker(s) share experiences and production practices for 40 minutes, and then we open the floor for questions and discussion.

We use Zoom to host these virtual events. To participate in shared learning calls, you can either join by phone or computer.

If you’d like to share suggestions for future shared learning call topics or speakers, please email Solveig Orngard.
