Emma and Marcus Johnson
Trainer Experience: We have had 2-4 full-time employees working for our farm year-round for the past ten years. We have had good experiences with other Labor4Learning trainees. They are motivated and often end up collaborating with us in their future farming endeavors. We have been a Labor4Learning trainee for three seasons. Marcus has a bachelor's degree in horticulture. Marcus also worked for the Royal Horticultural Society and Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Emma has a certificate of training from the Produce Safety Alliance and Preventative Controls 1 & 2. Both Emma and Marcus have a degree in landscape architecture and worked in this field for seven years prior to moving to the farm.
About the Farm
We are a family-owned and -operated, 80-acre diversified farm that grows herb plants, vegetables, apples, pears and row crops. We use organic practices for our vegetable crops and an integrated pest management system for our orchard. We have two moveable high tunnels for extending our growing season. The apple orchard is medium and high density, and we grow over 50 different varieties of apples. We sell our produce through the Iowa City Farmers Market, direct-wholesale and through our CSA. We also have an on-farm store open May through December and a processing kitchen where we process our fruit.
