Brad Law is one of Practical Farmers’ out-of-state members. He farms with his wife, Megan, and their three boys (Gentry, 6; Porter, 3; and Sawyer, born Jan. 7, 2017) at Law Farms LLC, their 300-acre farm near King City, Missouri, in the northwestern part of the state.

The family grows corn, soybeans, winter wheat and some farmers market produce. “For the produce, we are growing white and yellow popcorn; bi-color, non-GMO sweet corn; strawberries; peppers; tomatoes; and a variety of other items,” Brad says.

“This spring we are embarking on a new addition with a 26-by-96-foot high tunnel, which will be a new learning experience. We have also ordered 2,000 ever-berry strawberry plants to expand our strawberry production to beyond what our boys can eat.”

To help improve conservation efforts on the farm, Brad and Megan added winter wheat back into their crop rotation, which they follow with a cover crop. They also employ some no-till and terraces.

In addition to farming, Brad works as the agronomist for Willcross Seed, a family-owned seed company based in Missouri that started in the late 1970s.

“I cover anything along I-70 and north, and south of I-70 when needed,” Brad says. In September 2016, Brad started doing a weekly radio show for the company called Bull Sessions.

“We have a guest on each week and cover some topic related to farming or rural life,” Brad explains. “We have added special segments like ‘Bean of the Week,’ ‘Lady in Ag’ and ‘Focus on the Farmer,’ where we spotlight a farmer or lady in ag.

“Our goal with the show is to cover topics that get farmers to slow down and think a little bit about their operation, and look to improve it somehow. If you would like to nominate a farmer to be our focus, please email bull@willcross.net. ‘Bull Sessions’ airs every Saturday morning from 9-10 a.m. on 680KFEQ, or you can catch the show on YouTube or Facebook if you search Willcross Bull Sessions.”

Brad is an active participant on Practical Farmers’ email discussion lists — a key benefit of membership in Practical Farmers for anyone and way to network and build community, but especially so for out-of-state members. He also attended PFI’s 2017 annual conference in Ames.
