Stewarding Soil
Stewarding Soil Through Relay Cropping Small Grains and Soybeans
Tuesday, June 17
10 a.m.-Noon
Location
26577 180th St.
Leon, IA 50144
Hosts
Laban & Lori Miller
After growing up farming with his father and brother, Laban Miller started working his own field near Leon, Iowa, 12 years ago. Over time, he noticed terraces were not effectively reducing erosion in the rolling fields. He began incorporating cover crops and small grains into his rotations to improve soil retention and nutrient load. Today, Laban and his wife, Lori, grow corn, soybeans, rye, wheat and clover. They also partner with Laban’s father, Omar, and brother, Lyndon, to share equipment and graze cattle on pasture, cover crops and marginal acres.
The Millers have been active in PFI’s Cooperators’ Program in recent years, doing on-farm research to better meet soil health goals. They are excited to share their latest practices of relay cropping small grains with soybeans and stock cropping with livestock.
