NEWELL, Iowa (Aug. 2, 2022) — Jenna and Adam Cook, of Clovergold Flower Farm, will host a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day exploring how they started and have grown their young flower farm on Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 2-4 p.m., near Newell (1640 Otter Ave.).
The event – “Growing a Flower Farm” – is free to attend and will include light refreshments. Sign up online, or call Debra Boekholder at (515) 232-5661. The field day is sponsored by Ward Laboratories, Inc.
Please note: Due to the presence of livestock on the farm, attendees must also adhere to PFI’s biosecure event policy, which includes wearing clean footwear and clothes that have not been worn on other farms with livestock or livestock buildings, or around a dense population of wild birds.
Full guidelines for attending PFI’s biosecure events are available at practicalfarmers.org/biosecure-event-policy.
Jenna and Adam started Clovergold Flower Farm in 2018, combining Jenna’s passion for flowers with Adam’s agronomic acuity to plant their flower beds where a barn once stood on their northern Sac County farm.
Jenna has grown the business year by year, adding new varieties, more growing space and capitalizing on market opportunities through unique relationships with other small, local businesses.
At the field day, attendees will learn how Jenna and Adam started their farm – including the steps they took to amend their soil and prepare the beds, how they select and evaluate flower species varieties and how they use landscape fabric between rows.
They will also discuss marketing – including bouquet subscriptions and on-farm sales – and partnerships they have established with local businesses.
Full event details are available at practicalfarmers.org/ growing-a-flower-farm.
This event is part of PFI’s 2022 field day season, which includes 41 events hosted by farmers located across the state, and beyond, on topics spanning the agricultural spectrum. Attendees can expect a welcoming atmosphere, a spirit of curiosity, a culture of mutual respect and farmers openly sharing their knowledge and experience.
