Event Overview

Third-generation dairy farmer Josh Hiemstra has been working with his father, Robert, and son, Mason, to diversify his family’s farm with corn, soybeans, wheat, rye, canning peas, forage mixes and cover crops. In addition to milking 110 cows, raising custom dairy replacement heifers and finishing cross-bred beef cattle, Josh does custom planting, chopping, manure spreading and baling for neighboring farms.

At his field day, Josh will showcase his latest planting strategies and row spacings to better incorporate cover crops on his farm. With twin-row small grains and skip-row corn, he is opening the door to a variety of cover crop and cash crop interseeding opportunities. Legume and grass forage mixes enhance biodiversity on Josh’s farm and offer nutritious food for his cattle.
