MOUNT CARROLL, Illinois (July 26, 2022) — Justin and Ellen Rahn, of R & H Seed Solutions, will host a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day exploring how they are integrating cover crops and livestock, as well as collaborating with a neighbor, on Thursday, Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon, near Mount Carroll (6611 Black Oak Road).

The event – “Linking Cover Crops, Cattle and Neighbors” – is free to attend and will end with lunch. RSVPs are appreciated for the meal by July 31. Sign up online, or call Debra Boekholder at (515) 232-5661. The field day is sponsored by Bio Till Cover Crops, Midwest Grass & Forage and Illinois Beef.

Justin and Ellen farm on 1,200 acres raising corn, soybeans, small-grain crops and cattle. Seeding cover crops after corn, bean and small-grain harvests lets their cattle herds graze cover crops in the spring, summer and fall. They also work with neighboring farmer, Doug Linker, to get their livestock on even more land.

In addition, the Rahns raise their own cereal rye for seed, and through their business, R & H Seed Solutions, provide custom cover crop seed and application to other farmers in their area.

During the field day, the Rahns will share their efforts to make the most of cover crops on their farm. They’ll discuss their strategy for grazing cover crops, their collaboration with Doug and raising cover crops for seed.

They’ll also discuss frost-seeded and summer-seeded cover crops after small grains, and guests will have a chance to learn about seeding and storage equipment.
