Don’t Farm Naked!
PFI farmer Chris Blanchard of Rock Spring Farm has a great blog post about the recent increase in cover crop use he has noticed in Iowa:
Each fall, we try to plant cover crops everywhere we had bare soil on the farm. And we’d look around at neighboring farms, and see nothing but corn stalks and bean trash. […] This last fall, though, I noticed cover crops on at least three farms as I drove to town, and as soon as the snow melted in the spring, those same cover crops had greened up and started growing, changing solar energy into soil protection and organic matter. And these were acres on conventional farms!
