Looking for Some Fun This Saturday? Attend Beef Tasting Event Featuring Famous Chef! RSVP: 515.232.5661,

By Ann Seuferer

Ankeny farmers Craig and LaVon Griffieon invite you to come and learn about how breed, growing region, diet and processing influence the taste of beef at a Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) Field Day Saturday, September 17, 4 – 7 p.m.

Griffieon Family Farm is preparing for a feast of ribeye steak raised by PFI producers and prepared by Hollywood Chef Donna Prizgintas. Participants will use a scorecard to rate the flavors they prefer during a blind taste test.

Afterward, beef producers will discuss the different production and processing methods they use. The event will close with a light meal of local foods, conversation and tips for cooking meat. The public is invited to attend this event, which is free for Practical Farmers of Iowa members and only $20 for non-members. Join Practical Farmers of Iowa now for only $35 and attend for free. Please RSVP to Tomoko Ogawa, 515.232.5661, tomoko@practicalfarmers.org.

“This will be a great opportunity for people to see what kind of beef, raised which way, tastes best to them. Will it be corn-fed or grass-fed; Angus, Cross-bred or Limousin; commercial feedlot or pastured; hung for 21 days in a local locker or commercially harvested? And, what’s the difference anyway?” asks LaVon Griffieon. “I can’t think of any other place you could try this many types of beef to get your questions answered.”
