Insuring Specialty Crop Production – 2021 Virtual Annual Conference

By Practical Farmers of Iowa

Crop insurance policies that are affordable and cost-effective, even Whole Farm Revenue Protection policies designed to benefit diverse growers, can be very difficult for producers to procure. This audience-driven roundtable discussion is about insuring specialty crop operations to learn more about risk management options on diverse farms.

  • Emma and Marcus Johnson operate Buffalo Ridge Orchard near Central City, Iowa, with Emma’s parents, Mary and Vernon Zahradnik. The 80-acre farm includes 5 acres of diversified vegetables (field and high tunnel) and 13 acres of orchard. The farm is covered by a Whole Farm Revenue Protection policy.
  • Ann and Eric Franzenburg own and operate Pheasant Run Farm near Van Horne, Iowa. They operate a diversified operation that includes row crops, cut flowers, fruits and vegetables and more. Ann and Eric lost crops and critical farm infrastructure during the August 2020 derecho.
