AMES, Iowa (Oct. 17, 2024) — Businesses focused on sustainable agriculture and looking for support to scale up are encouraged to apply for Practical Farmers of Iowa’s new Sustainable Agriculture Business Incubator (SABI) program. Enrollment is now open and will close Nov. 4.

The program, made for businesses that support farming practices that protect the environment and conserve natural resources, empowers business owners and entrepreneurs to navigate common business challenges, raise capital and ultimately realize their entrepreneurial vision.

“The success of these businesses is vital to the future of farming,” says Savanah Laur, PFI’s business viability manager. “If we want more people to use sustainable farming practices, we’ve got to support these various businesses, so they can thrive. Often people are interested in scaling up but don’t know how to make the jump. With one-on-one support, we want to help them get there.”

The SABI program is ideal for agricultural entrepreneurs and agricultural startups like processors, input providers, aggregation and distribution services and other similar initiatives. Businesses just need to be supporting or involved in sustainable agriculture.

Participants can expect:

  • Business Planning and Strategy – Help developing robust business plans, conducting market research and identifying growth opportunities.
  • Mentorship and Coaching – Personalized support and guidance to navigate challenges and achieve their goals.
  • Access to Capital – Help with accessing various types of capital and funding sources to support their business expansion and growth.

Businesses accepted into the program will receive high-level coaching from Grey Swan, an investment firm focused on regenerative agriculture, to help them address barriers and bottlenecks to success. A select number of participants will go on to get additional coaching on how to use private equity investment as a tool for success.

Preference will be given to PFI members and businesses in Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota. Those who are not members can join at practicalfarmers.org.

Enrollment is now open and will close Nov. 4, 2024. Those accepted into the program will start January 2025. Full details and the application form are available at practicalfarmers.org/sustainable-agriculture-business-incubator.
