Seeding Rates for Drilling a Winter Wheat Cover Crop – Practical Cover Crops

By Practical Farmers of Iowa

McKane Wells uses winter wheat as a cover crop, for grazing and for establishing hay on his farm near Milton, Iowa. He likes winter wheat as opposed to cereal rye, especially ahead of corn because it is less likely to take off quickly in the spring.

In this video, he discusses what winter wheat seeding rates he uses and why. McKane also shows the components of his Great Plains drill and discusses how adding a weigh bar to this drill has improved seeding rate accuracy for drilling operations across the farm.
