Grazing Cover Crops and Building Community 101

Learn how Greg Rebman and Luke Jones worked together to combine knowledge and skill sets, overcome challenges and develop a profitable contract grazing partnership. We will see a field of wheat underseeded with clover that is a part of PFI’s small-grains cost-share program. Greg will also talk about the importance of supporting young farmers and cultivating healthy landowner-tenant relationships.

THE FARM:
Greg Rebman has been farming since 1977. He is passionate about soil health and building relationships with landowners and young farmers that will strengthen his rural community. Rebman Farms comprises 1,524 acres, including 124 acres of owned cropland, 80 acres of pasturelands and nine distinctly different farms with multiple landlords. Greg grows a diversified rotation that includes a small-grains crop, and he is working toward a system that is less reliant on farm chemicals.

Note: The group will meet at the address in Frederick. Then we will caravan to the small grains field.
DIRECTIONS:
To 6795 Illinois Route 100: From Rushville, head east on E Adams Street / Old Route 67 and go about 6.5 miles; the road will turn into Market Street. Continue for 2.5 miles and turn right (west) on IL Route 100; you’ll see Greg’s white hoophouse on the left (south) side of the road.
To the small grains field: From the white hoophouse building in Frederick, travel east on IL Route 100 to the stop sign. Turn left (north) on SB 13 / Market Street, go 1.3 miles and turn right (east) on Boston Lane; continue for 0.5 mile, following the signage.
