Hybrid Rye: Managing, Marketing, and Feeding Livestock

Learn all about the basics of growing hybrid rye, finding markets and feeding livestock with small grains. Loran will also share his experiences with various rye varieties, growing malt barley and relay cropping.

THE FARM:
Loran Steinlage is a grain farmer who also works as a practical field engineer for Dawn Equipment and Underground Agriculture. His farm produces a diverse set of crops including corn, soybeans, cereal rye, wheat, barley, buckwheat and cover crops.

(Note: The hybrid rye field is adjacent to the the Fayette County Sherriff’s Office on the northwest corner. Park in the sheriff’s office parking lot).

DIRECTIONS:
To the field: From West Union, head south on IA Hwy 150 and go 1.5 miles. Turn right (west) onto N Industrial Parkway and go 0.2 mile. Park at the Fayette County Sheriff’s office, next to the hybrid rye field.
In case of rain: If it rains, we will set up in Loran’s garage. From West Union, head south on IA Hwy 150 for 1 mile. Turn right (west) onto W Franklin Street and go about 1 mile; the farm will be on the left (south) side of the road.
MEAL INFORMATION:
Food will be available to purchase from the local 4-H club. Please RSVP by clicking the blue button below.
We take RSVP numbers to get an idea of the amount of food that we need to provide for the event. If you RSVP after the deadline but before the event, you are still welcome, but we cannot guarantee a meal.
