Reducing Inputs and Increasing Resilience
Reducing Inputs and Increasing Resilience Through Cover Crops and Building Soil Health
Wednesday, July 30
3-5 p.m.
Location
4449 Hickory Ave.
Orange City, IA 51041
Hosts
Dave & Jon Kiel, A.C.E. Farms
Dave Kiel has been using biologicals in his farming practices since the 1980s. When his son, Jon Kiel, started farming with him, they added cover crops and no-till to the mix. They farm 420 acres of corn, soybean, small grains and forage crops. Together, Dave and Jon have improved water infiltration and decreased perennial weed pressure. They’ve also been able to decrease their chemical inputs. Recently, they started integrating livestock into their fields to help build soil health and reduce fertilizer inputs.
Join Dave and Jon to learn about building soil health with cover crops. They’ll share how covers improve resiliency in variable weather conditions and the benefits of integrating livestock with row crops. You’ll also hear from a panel of farmers talking about their cover crop experience and alternative forage options.
