Production of Small Grains for Seed Markets – Panel
The increasing demand and premium price for cover crop seeds like oats and rye has many growers looking to these markets to fit small grains profitability into their operation. However, seed is heavily regulated, and laws governing seed sales and labeling vary from state to state. In addition, there are some production tricks to grow a high quality seed crop that differ from techniques employed for food or feed grade grain.
This session covers both topics. Andy Walsh from Deer Creek Seed; Jack Kaltenberg of PIP Seeds; John Petty of the Crop Improvement Association and Greg Holmbrecht of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture present on production and management of small grains for seed as well as the rules that govern seed production and sales in Wisconsin.
