Farm Transfer and Diversification: Shepherding in the Next Generation – Blain Hjertaas
Blain Hjertaas and his son Martin are the third and fourth generations, respectively, to work the family century farm in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada. When Martin returned to the farm, he brought with him the idea of raising sheep in addition to the existing grass-based cattle operation. Hear the Hjertaas’ farm transition story and learn how (and why) they chose sheep as a new enterprise for the next generation.
Blain is a third-generation farmer with over 45 years of experience who farms with his son and family near Redvers, Canada. After transitioning from a conventional high-tech approach over 20 years ago, Blain developed a passion for soil health and conservation. He and his family have received numerous awards for their conservation efforts.
