DES MOINES, Iowa (June 10, 2022) — Monika Owczarski, of Sweet Tooth Farm, and Amy Joens, of Chicory Grove Farm, will host a Practical Farmers of Iowa social gathering for beginning farmers on Thursday, June 23, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at 1924 8th St. in Des Moines.

The event – “Summer Beginning Farmer Social With Des Moines Urban Farmers” – is free to attend and will include a potluck meal. A main dish will be provided. Guests are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share, as well as a lawn chair and beverage. RSVPs are appreciated for the meal by June 18.

To sign up, visit the event page at practicalfarmers.org/field-days or call Debra Boekholder at (515) 232-5661. The event is sponsored by Iowa Farmers Union.

Note: The gathering will be hosted on an urban lot, with parking on the street. Once parked, follow the field day signs to the PFI event tent.

The gathering is a chance for beginning farmers to connect with another and learn about each other’s market happenings, plans for the year and improvements from last year during an evening of good food and networking.

Hosts Monika and Amy – who often find themselves sharing neighboring stands at the Heart of Des Moines Farmers Market – will also share their experiences with starting an urban farm, from the challenges to the joys of growing food and nourishing their local communities.

Full event details are available at practicalfarmers.org/summer-beginning-farmer-social-with-des-moines-urban-farmers.

This event is part of Practical Farmers’ 2022 field day season, which includes 41 events hosted by farmers located across the state, and beyond, on topics spanning the agricultural spectrum. Attendees can expect a welcoming atmosphere, a spirit of curiosity, a culture of mutual respect and farmers openly sharing their knowledge and experience.
