VAN HORNE, Iowa (Sept. 7, 2022) — Ann, Eric and Calvin Franzenburg, of Pheasant Run Farm, will host a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day exploring the vital role insurance played in their ability to recover from the 2020 derecho on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 2-4 p.m., near Van Horne (6925 19th Ave.).
The event – “Risk Management and Disaster Recovery: A Come-Back Story at Pheasant Run Farm” – is free to attend and will end with a barbecue meal. Sign up online, or call Debra Boekholder at (515) 232-5661. The field day is sponsored by Iowa Farmers Union.
Location note: When arriving at the farm, please follow field day signs o the parking area near the farm’s shops.
When the August 2020 derecho swept across Iowa, Pheasant Run Farm was in the midst of its annual “Sunflower Experience” tourism event, preparing for crop harvest and in full swing with cut flower and high tunnel production.
With the exception of their house, the Franzenburgs lost every crop and building on the farm, including greenhouses, high tunnels, the packhouse and outbuildings.
Remarkably, the Franzenburgs had insurance coverage for not only their farm structures, but also for their crops. Without it, they would likely not be back in business. With more frequent extreme weather events comes increased risk, particularly for specialty crops that too often are not covered by insurance.
At the field day, the Franzenburgs will share how they worked with their insurance agent and were able to get rebuilt and growing again. They will discuss insurance for farm structures and specialty crops, and greenhouse construction following a disaster.
