Help us Grow the Next Generation of Farmers

Over the past 55 years, the number of Iowa farms has shrunk from 206,000 to 86,000 – a 58% decrease – resulting in larger and fewer farms. With agriculture as a main economic driver in Iowa, we must find ways to get farmers back on the land. The next generation of farmers is vital to grow our food, steward our land and keep our rural communities vibrant.

Practical Farmers of Iowa’s Savings Incentive Program has helped 123 beginning farmers establish and improve their farm businesses, and we need to raise $20,000 in savings matches so we can enroll the next round of participants in our Savings Incentive Program later this year.

All donations received between now and July 15 will directly match beginners’ savings in the two-year program after they have completed all requirements, which include: creating a business plan; attending events focused on challenges they face; completing a mentorship; and checking in regularly with PFI staff on their progress toward establishing successful farm businesses. During the program, participants are encouraged to save monthly. Upon graduation, a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $2,400, gets invested in their budding farm.

Please consider donating to this important program today to help this next generation of farmers invest in their businesses.

Donate Through Your Donor-Advised Fund

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a centralized charitable account. It allows charitably-inclined individual, families and businesses to make tax-deductible charitable donations of cash, publicly-traded stock and in some case, certain illiquid assets, to a public charity that sponsors a DAF program.

Leave a Legacy

Making a planned gift to Practical Farmers can direct your dollars to sustainable agriculture (not taxes), simplify your estate plans – and perhaps increase your income.

Gifts of Grain

Gifting grain directly to Practical Farmers (rather than selling the grain and making a gift from the proceeds) may provide farm operators with more significant tax savings.

Honorary/Memorial Gift

Practical Farmers gratefully accepts donations made in honor or in memory. Recognition will appear in the annual report.

An endowment is a charitable gift investment fund. The principal is invested in perpetuity; up to 5% of balance can be paid out on an annual basis.
