Another season of farmer-to-farmer learning is here! Nearly 60 farms across Iowa, as well as Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin, are opening their farm gates to share knowledge about small grains, orcharding, grazing, agritourism, weed control and more.
Jason and Sarah Russell farm near Monticello, Iowa, where the family farming roots trace back to the Civil War era. There, they grow corn, soy, rye and diverse forage mixes, and raise cattle, sheep and pigs. They have been using cover crops and no-till since 2010, and use renewable energy with their hog operation. Come learn about the new crops Jason is trying, including camelina and canola, in addition to his work on relay-cropping rye and wheat. Jason will also discuss his sustainable hog production, using hog manure as a fertility source and overall nutrient management while increasing yields.
