Heidi EgerWhy do you want to farm?

I want to farm because I find joy in being outside, building trust with sheep, working to improve the health of the ecosystem and connecting with people over food.

What are you farming right now?

I have a small flock of Katahdin sheep and pastured broiler chickens. I sell 100% grass-fed lamb and mutton along with pastured chicken directly to consumers.

What’s your vision for your farm?

I’m working towards a farm where my sister and I raise sheep, chickens, elderberries and other perennial fruits. In my vision, our farm enterprises will pay for themselves and the farm mortgage. The health and biodiversity of the land will increase each year as we work to promote the health of our animals and crops. We host occasional events to bring our friends and neighbors to the farm to see what we’re up to and to learn from each other. My sister and I balance responsibilities so we also have enough time for leisure activities, trips and friends.

Why do you want to participate in this program?

I am looking forward to meeting other beginning farmers and I am very excited to have a mentor!
